Brief Biography
There are two words that can sum up my undergraduate experience at UB- people and places. Academically, my degree in anthropology allowed me to study how people function in society and my degree in geography explained the relation to their environment. Socially, I tried to be as active as I could with campus life: this university has so many opportunities to become a part of a community. All of these experiences eventually blended together into my pursuit of masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning with a focus on Community Development. The city of Buffalo has a wealth of fantastic people and places that has created an immense potential for becoming an even better area to live. As the Graduate Assistant for the Civic Engagement Academy, it is my goal to encourage student involvement in Buffalo and the Western New York community to eventually love this city as much as I do.

How was your Thanksgiving Break?

Hey guys,

We're curious about the fun you had back home on break!

I had a nice relaxing time not being seeing the inside of Hayes Hall and definitely ate too much food. It was my first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian which made my mom real nervous, but she handled the stuffed squash well! I also saw my friend who is living in NYC. We haven't hung out in two years- it was an awesome time!

Your stories?

Trip to Niagara Falls

On Sunday, October 11th, Academies students visited one of the world's wonders- Niagara Falls. No matter how many times you visit, it is always an awe-inspiring sight. Massive amounts of water that flow over the falls is impressive enough, but the scenic view also helps take your breath away.
After spending sometime time at the top of the falls, students ventured into the Cave of the Winds. As we approached the ticket area, it was clear by seeing the people who had just left the cave just how we… Continue

I mean a couple things - I'm not the traditional freshman - I'm 28, going back to school, so want to connect with some people at least closer to my age, i want to make the most of my experience at ub and so want to get involved here and also want to really explore a lot of different things that relate to what I want to do, so I make conections for when its time to get a job and also to expose myself to a lot of different and varied things (not sure myself exactly what that last one means, which is why I want to meet up with new people) -thanks

Hey Derek,
Thanks man. I guess I want to know how I can use/be involved with the Academies to forward what I'm trying to achieve. I an ME student and want to do something connected, if that makes sense. Any advice on that would be helpful. Thanks man.

Tuesday, December 1 @ 1PM

On Tuesday, December 1 at 1PM, the Undergraduate Academies hosted a guest speaker Dr. Sarah-Bay Cheng, from the Department of Theatre & Dance.

Presenting a new perspective on body art and expression. Dr. Cheng discussed three types of art: body art, body modification, and body hacking.

When we think of tattoos and piercings, we are first intrigued by what is drawn or done to the body. However, we have to remember, that these are pieces of expression. A person who gets a tattoo or a set of… Continue
